The Vilalba Capon Fair
The Vilalba Capon Fair is the event which marks the start of the Christmas festivals in the Terra Chá area. On the 21st of December each year, the town wakes up to a throng of people buying capon chicken from all corners of Spain, as sales of the produce begin at nine o’clock in the morning.

These capons have a long history, documented in bibliographic references mentioning the existence of capons in the area since 1521. In many of these sources it is stated that they were used as payment to the feudal lords.
References to the fair appear in documents dating back to 1838, although a significant increase in the census of animals on sale can be seen from 1965 onwards.
