Prehistoric and Archaeological Museum of Vilalba

Prehistoric and Archaeological Museum

Prehistoric and Archaeological Museum

This museum is a Municipal Public Foundation presided over by a patron whose activities centre around the research, custody, conservation and dissemination of Prehistoric and Ancient History of Galicia. After ten years at its former site it has been housed in the present building in calle Domingo Goas since the summer of 2002.

The permanent exhibition on display here is a journey through different eras and explores the cultures which settled here in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, from the first settlers to the Romans. This is not only an exhibition of hoards upon hoards of objects, because there is special emphasis on the cultural, technological and economic processes of these societies making this a worthwhile educational visit.

Besides this exhibition, there are other temporary exhibitions which tour after being displayed at the museum. The cultural programme of the centre is complemented with organised courses, seminars and conference programmes, together with three series of published editions.

The fields of research of the centre cover the nature of the Palaeolithic and epipalaeolithic ages in Galicia and the reconstruction of Palaeolithic sites in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The museum also provides an Educational Action programme both for school groups and adult collectives. This initiative offers many resources which can be used individually or together according to the interests of the participants or the time available. The duration of the visit can vary between an hour and a whole day, depending on the resources chosen by the visitors. The Museum also provides an educational programme for family groups.
