The patron saint festivals in the town take place at the end of August, honouring San Ramón (31st of August) and Santa María (1st of September). Celebrations last more than a week, and during this time the town population increases considerably between visitors, people from the neighbouring parishes and emigrants who come back home for their holidays.

Orchestras, folk and rock groups, film projections, plays, games and entertainments for the children are just some of the activities provided for these dates.

The “Xira Campestre” is one of the most significant festivals. Each year more than 30,000 people come together in the enclosure of the Madalena river to eat, dance and enjoy themselves for two days. The “Xira Campestre de la Tercera Edad” has been bringing together senior citizens throughout Galicia and Castille-León for more than a decade.

The start of the festive celebrations is marked by announcing the winner of the Literary Competition of the Town Council of Vilalba. Winners include authors such as Fiz Vergara Vilariño, Manuel Xosé Neira, Marica Campo and Xabier Alcalá.
