Darío Villanueva

He was born on July 5th, 1950. He is a professor of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela, belonging to its Department of Spanish Literature, Literary Theory, and Linguistics.

He is a member of the International Association of Hispanists, and the current president of the Spanish Society of General and Compared Literature. He is also a member of the Spanish Association of Literary Theory, an association he presided from 1996 until 2001, and member of the Spanish Society of Semiotics ant of the Twentieth Century Spanish Association of America.

He was the Secretary and later the Dean of the Philology Faculty at the University of Santiago between 1978 and 1990. In June 1994 he was elected Vice-Chancellor of that same university, being re-elected in 1998.

Darío Villanueva was Visiting Professor at the Spanish School of Middlebury College (Vermont) in 1987, at the University of Colorado (Boulder) in 1988 and 1993, and at the University of Bourgogne (Dijon) from 1989 until 1991.

On July 5th, 2007, he has been elected member of the Royal Academy of Spanish Language, holding the seat Capital D which was vacant since Zamora Vicente's death.
